There are certain qualities that are common among the best web design agencies. Whether you are looking for an agency to make a web site for you, or you are thinking about starting a web design agency of your own, you should pay close attention to these qualities. They could mean the difference between a successful experience and a poor experience. Of course, you only need to really deeply analyze agencies the first time you hire one. After that, you can go back to the same one you used before, since you already know what they are like, and have developed personal relationships.

First of all, a good web design agency should have a large array of previous work that they have done. They should also make it clear on their web site. Going to their site, you should see a huge list of web sites – real, commercial web sites that are currently in use. You can quickly click on all of these and browse through the work that the agency has done in the past. Not only should there be a lot of different sites, but each one should be unique. This shows that the agency has the ability to make diverse sites that truly reflect the company that they represent, rather than just cookie-cutter sites.

The diversity of the web sites reflects another positive quality of your designer, and that is the fact that they really communicate well with their clients. They get hired by a business, and they make every possible effort to find out exactly what the business stands for, and what they wish to accomplish with their web site. This becomes obvious when you see the final product. If possible, you should find feedback of the particular agency, and see if their previous clients mention anything about their cooperativeness, or their ability to work with the company to create a better site.

All of these qualities point to the overall ability of a web design agency to create a web site that satisfies the customers desires, as well as sell whatever product or service the company is offering. So if you are starting a web design agency, do everything you can to strive towards these ideas. And if you are looking for a web design agency to make a web site for your company, be sure to consider all of these factors when considering each prospect.

If you're looking for an easy to use web design software that will not take you a couple light years figuring out how to operate, then keep reading. Today we're going to go over a few things you should keep in mind when looking for an "easy to use" web design software.

1.WYSIWYG

WYSIWYG is the acronym for What You See Is What You Get. It's a system that allows for non-technical users to design and build web pages without knowing any HTML. The most common web design software that uses WYSIWYG technology is Microsoft Frontpage, followed by Adobe Dreamweaver.

While these types of web design software can help the non-technical user to create a simple website, the learning curve for more complex websites will likely turn off many non-technical users.

2. Web vs. Desktop Software

We've already talked about software such as Frontpage and Dreamweaver, these are considered to be desktop software because you download it to your personal computer and install it on your hard drive.

These days we have the option to also choose web based software that resides on another computer other than yours. One of the most popular examples of this is a product called SiteBuildIt!

Web site design software that is web-based will typically be pretty easy to use, but they can also be somewhat pricey considering they usually charge a monthly or yearly charge to use their software or "script".

3. WordPress CMS

WordPress is not a web design software. It what's called a "content management system" (CMS). So why then am I mentioning it in this article? Because you can create a pretty technical website / blog without knowing a lick of code.

Since WordPress is "open source" we all have the luxury of benefitting from the hard work 1,000's of programmers put in to create specialized WordPress plugins that make it easy for the average joe to bring cutting edge functionality to his web site or blog.

Another benefit to WordPress is that you can easily change the "design" of your entire web site or blog simply by changing out your "theme" with the click of a couple buttons.

In conclusion, it's important to keep in mind that while there are many "easy to use" web design software solutions one could use to create his or her own web site, you'll need to examine your own situation to determine which solution is right for you.

If funds are limited, but still want unlimited possibilities, I would look into WordPress, but hey I do not need to tell you twice, right?

WordPress is changing the way people setup and use a website. WordPress is revolutionizing the web design industry and allows anyone to easily set up their own website. The challenge is that by default WordPress is very blog orientated. One of the first things you'll notice is that the homepage displays posts instead of pages.

So what do you do when your client does not want to blog and the theme's homepage has a whole bunch of empty posts? You need to get WordPress to switch from posts to a page, but how? If your WordPress theme is currently displaying posts but you want it to display regular editable content, it's easy change to make. First start by adding a new page and giving it a title. To add a page simply click on add new, under the pages menu.

Now add your page title and your homepage text then save it by clicking the publish button. The next step is to go to the reading link under the settings main menu. Once there, select a static page and then select the page you just added in the front page menu. Then click the save changes button to save your new options. Now go look at your website's homepage, it will now have the content that you added to that static page!
You can go back and edit the homepage content at anytime by editing the new page.

It could not be easier, except if you saw the screen shots that went along with this.

One of the most important resources that can be provided by an IT services unit in any company is web design. It goes without saying that if your company has a presence on the web and it is not used to its full potential, then you are missing out on huge volumes of business. As you are probably aware, the Internet abounds with hundreds of millions of websites and, depending on your business, there is an increasing number of competitors entering your market every day around the world. But you may be surprised to discover that many websites fail to capitalize on their potential by not adhering to principles of good design and visitor usability.

It's easy to draw a parallel with a physical store in that if you do not display your goods properly and have a welcoming entrance, you are unlikely to attract even the most casual passerby. It is the same with a website: you have to provide an easily navigable entry and grab a visitor's attention immediately to entice them further.

Design is not simply a thing of beauty, it is a matter of functionality and, unfortunately, many Web designers fall into the trap of producing a beautiful design which falls short when it comes to ease of navigation.

It is important to get the blend absolutely perfect in order to maximize your online sales and there are some important issues which need to be covered.

  • Apart from having an in-depth knowledge of code, a good web designer will build a site with a simple architecture. This means that your page will load quickly and that visitors will be immediately presented with an easy to understand interface that enables them to find what they are looking for as quickly as possible. It does not matter whether you have a huge variety of products or not, you must think of your design in terms of how well it serves the needs of your visitor.
  • Layout is the next most important thing that any business needs to consider. In keeping with the principals mentioned above, your site needs to be logically laid out and color-coded so that visitors are left in no doubt as to the range of products you have available which can easily be found through a simple menu system.
  • Navigability is something which many web designs sadly lack. The navigation of your site should be prominently placed either at the top of the page or easily seen in a sidebar so that visitors can logically detect the layout of your site and go straight to the area they wish.
  • Most importantly occasionally is the element of content. It should be a no-brainer but your content must be written for both human visitors and for search engines. This means you have to strike a neat balance between using keywords that allow search engines to understand the content of your site and so rank it accordingly, as well as providing information which is relevant to web surfers so they can find the information they were seeking.

These few tips are only the start and your IT services department should be given full rein to provide a design that satisfies every criteria.

If you're looking at commissioning a web designer to build you a website, one of the first things that you will need to know, is the monetary cost. This article will explain to you why there is such a huge variance between web designers and their quotes and will give you some advice as to how much you can expect to pay to contract a competent web designer in the UK.

First of all you have to have a rough idea of what it is that you want from your website. You have to have thought of what you want to achieve with the website. What are its objectives? You will then need to have thought of a basic structure for your website. There are many website examples out there for you to have a look at; the important thing is to have an idea about what structure you want for the site – meaning a rough outline of the numbers of pages and the content (text and images) that will make up each page.

Once you have your project objectives in mind and a rough idea of your websites structure you are in a position to start contacting suppliers. There are multiple types of web design companies everywhere and in our particular area of the UK – Doncaster there are lots of web design companies to choose from. The key thing to remember is that everyone wants your business. The web design marketplace is completely designed so as you the buyer have the upper hand!

As in all other industries there are people who provide excellent service, there are people who provide an average service and there are also cowboys (people who sell web design services without the necessary knowledge and experience to do so).

What you have to think to yourself is this: If a person promises me the earth for £ 1 does that mean to say that they can deliver it? The best advice I can give is to be realistic. There are lots of really good city based web design companies throughout the UK that provide excellent services. They are always there to take your calls and you even get your own personal account manager to handle your requests and hold your hand through the entire web design process. The services of such companies are wonderful but this clearly comes at a price. City based offices, account managers and admin staff are large overheads and the prices charged by large city based web design companies reflect this. If you have a modestly sized website, which needs to be under content management system control, do not be surprised if the web design quote runs into tens of thousands of pounds from a major city based web design company. If you are looking for a top quality 100% inclusive, comprehensive service and your company can afford this kind of bill then I would suggest using a big city company every time.

Then there are the smaller companies that are made up of just a few individuals. These types of companies have much lower overheads and frequently have very knowledgeable and capable staff. The service level can be much lower than that of major city based web design companies but you can get some excellent work done by such companies at a fraction of cost of the large city based companies.

A much overlooked group of web designers that can produce some excellent web designs are the wide community of freelance web designers. Freelance web designers are private, self employed individuals who work from small offices (they frequently work from home). Freelancers have very low (mostly non existent) overheads. As such they can provide quality web design work for much lower costs than larger web design companies. If you are looking for good quality web design for less money then it definitely work looking at using a quality freelance web designer.

The people that you really need to avoid are the web design cowboys. As stated above cowboys are people who sell web design services without the necessary knowledge and experience to do so. If you are unfortunate enough to have contracted someone like this in the past you will be aware of the low quality work that they produce and the lack of significant results that they achieve. Cowboys invariable promise you the earth for a £ 1. Use your common sense and if someone is quoting you £ 100 for something that 5 other companies are charging around £ 4000 for, you know that something is not quite right. Remember the old adage – buy cheap, buy twice!

Conclusion:

You will find a great deal of variance between web design quotes depending on what level of web designer you choose to contract and what level of service you require. Always make sure to get as many quotes and talk to as many people as you can so a) see what's available on the market and b) get an unbiased idea of the likely costs involved. There are lots of good web designers out there but there are also a lot of less skilled web designers and even some of the proverbial cowboys. Make sure to use good common sense and get a feel for the web designer's skills and experience when you meet them. No matter how charming a person is, experience is very hard to fake. Ask to see examples of their work and where they have done similar work to your proposed project. Remember – you have the upper hand!

For example, Google uses an algorithm involving over 200 factors to determine the ranking of websites for a specific search yet Google will never release information on any of the factors. But through persistent testing, web designers have been able to identify some factors to include into your website and research.

Market knowledge

You must know your target market, including understanding the keywords potential visitors search. You can take advantage of online software's which can provide a breakdown on the volume of traffic for keywords and produce a difficulty scale to beat competitors for those keyword search results. Make sure you're targeting the correct keywords.

Good user experience

Create a good user experience in every aspect of the user's process. This will include the quality of your site (content, links, images and more and processes. If you ensure that every user has a positive experience and comes away with new knowledge, search engines will mark this as a positive aspect of your website and rank you higher.

Site Speed

The time a site takes to load and during the user's interaction. Make sure your website is running at optimal speed. As slower sites will rank lower following research from Google which produced a positive correlation between the duration of time for a site to load and users who do not wait . A small alteration to your websites structure, the volume of content and optimization of images will affect site speed dramatically.

Keyword usage

The volume of keywords is a controversial subject. Research1 by some web design experts have identified that the volume of a keyword in a website's text affects ranking. The research1 showed that a keyword used approximately 2.4% on a web page is most effective and also highlighted that you can also incorporate 1.5% similar works to your keywords to maximize your SEO (Visually presented below). Whereas other web designers believe keyword volume does not have any correlation to SEO and the focus should be on the quality of content. Neverheless, utilizing both opinions can be incorporated into any content for cover both possibilities to enhance your SEO.

You may be reading this as you're new to SEO and discovering it is a complex and fast-changing environment or brushing up on your knowledge. To become a web designer in the UK you do not really need any formal qualifications by law in order to set up on your own and start designing websites for clients. This is both a blessing and a curse to professionals wishing to work in the web design industry. On one hand it makes it very easy for professionally skilled individuals to join a rewarding and potentially very lucrative industry. On the other hand the industry is given a bad name, confused and cheapened by cowboy web designers, who enter the industry without adequate qualifications, skills and experience.

This article outlines the qualification that you will realistically need in order to embark on a career in web design and obtain a role with a UK web design company.

Qualifications Needed:

First of all, to become a web designer one of the pre-requisite qualifications in the UK is to be higher educated. This means a minimum of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in a computer or media related subject or better still, a degree from a red-brick university. I personally hold a first class honors degree (BSc) in computer science from the University of Sunderland, which I am certain allowed to get me a foot in the door of one of the leading web design companies in the Yorkshire area. Studying for such qualifications allows you to develop an awareness of the industry and allows a lot of time for self learning of software skills and web design techniques, which are critical for a career as a web designer.

Skills Needed:

Some (but not all) of the skills which you will need in order to become a web designer are:

HTML

CSS

Photoshop

SQL

ASP / PHP

Macromedia Development Packages

Flash

Of course the skills that you need will vary depending on the area of web design that you intend to pursue. Graphically oriented web designers will need strong graphic design skills such as adobe photoshop, fireworks and flash. Web Designer that are more coding oriented will need a strong command of the following skills: HTML, CSS, SQL and ASP or PHP. The latter are typically referred to as web developers rather than web designers.

Getting All Important Web Design Experience:

The time taken to achieve competency in web design technologies in my opinion is 3 years this can be coupled with the time it takes to study for a degree at a UK university. Of course formal qualifications are only a small piece of the puzzle. It is the experience gained from your first web design job that you will find most valuable.

From my own experience, I learned more from my first 6 months working in the web design industry than I did during my 3 years at university. There really is no substitute for the experience of working with a professional web design company and being able to ask experienced web designers for help and advice.

Developing A Specialism:

Over time it is definitely worth developing a web design specialism. For me it was the development of search engine optimized website. It was that particular area of web design that took my interest and the area in which I have excelled as a website designer. Becoming a specialist in a particular area will really raise your stock and will allow you to become and expert in your own particular niche.

You can have the fanciest website design in the world, but if it's hard to find or identify the content your site then your site is going to waste, it's not going to help anyone find what they want and if they can not find what they want they are out of there.

Here's some web design tips and ideas to make your website user friendly and to ensure it does what it supposedly to do … Provide information !!

The first thing to do is to make sure the body of your content is relevant and readable. If you have large blocks of text, make sure you space them out even so the reader has smaller chunks to read, that way you will keep their interest for longer.

Also, make sure the font size of your text is big enough to read clearly and easily. You see some sites with10-pixel-tall text in Verdana font and while that may look neat and tidy the reader really has to strain their eyes to read the actual text. Make sure the text is at least 11 to 12 Arial or Verdana

Make it easy for visitors to navigate to the content that they are looking for on your site. If you've got a lot of articles on different topics on your site make sure that visitor can identify and find that article easily.

You have to find a means to enable the visitor to do that without hassle.

Create a summary page with categories and an index of articles that they can link to straightaway.

Make sure pages and images load fast, because you do not want to lose any visitors.

Most visitors will leave a website if within 15 seconds if has not loaded completely, so make sure your information is loaded and delivered to the visitors as soon as possible to retain their attention and keep them there.

Finally, test each and every link on your site regularly, there is nothing more frustrating to the reader than believing they have found what they want only to find they can not get there. Not only that, it can hurt your search engine rankings.

Make sure website is successful by doing the right website planning and following up with a good easy to navigate web design .

As we're coming to the middle of this year, everyone is trying to analyze the recent trends in web designing and web development. However, in this article, we'll see what web designers and developers are trying to utilize with the new features to create impressive designs. We will also try to look into the factors that are driving this change.

1. The days of static design visuals are dead
With the online technology that is available today, web designers are coding websites more creatively than using simple images and html / css. Clients have come to expect a higher level of functionality and interactivity as they visit more and more websites that utilize things like Ajax, and JavaScript. Whilst CSS3 / HTML5 has started to step on the faces of JavaScript, JavaScript itself has started to inch into the territory of Flash. JavaScript has just finished a major revision of its specifications for the language. Once browser companies adopt these standards, web developers will be provided with more tools to improve their capabilities in creating web applications.

2. Grid-based designs, Mobile Designs, Retro Designs are gaining popularity as well.
But Grid based is used mostly in notebooks, product pages and big blogs; they almost never appear on corporate websites or in online shops. With the huge amount of data present, classifying information based on context rather than content will be paramount for companies which handle large amount of data (financial, social, etc).

3. Print Design impact
Traditional techniques from print design are increasingly being applied to the Web, be they layout techniques or rich versatile typography. Web Designers are taking layout and design inspiration from print. This includes lots of whitespace, large type, use of a grid and clear hierarchy of elements. The layouts of these websites often resemble those of print magazines or posters, with striking headlines, multi-column text, highlighted quotes, indented text, supporting imagery, side notes and footnotes.

4. Faster and better Web browsers
Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera has offered more choices to web users. But, well, it is part of a web designer's job to make sure that texts are easy and nice to read on all major browsers and platforms. With browser wars is in full force, Techniques for progressive enhancement are more commonplace than before, giving users of modern web browsers a better web experience than those who will not or can not use them. This has clearly drive competition in web designing.

5. Growth of community-oriented Platforms
In many ways, the growth of platforms such as Twitter and Facebook has led the web to be much more community-oriented. Along with these changes will come increased focus in getting information in real-time. Twitter is one of the examples that give immediate and breaking information on the sites. With more and more growth of such social media platforms and more people participating in the creation of information on the web, the way in which we obtain information has shift from being from a singular source, into a more community-created source.

6. Interactive Designs
Web designers of Web applications are paying significantly more attention to the way in which functionality is presented and are trying to improve the user experience with more interactive and responsive solutions. There's a lot more emphasis now on site usability and creating sites that are minimalist in design and easy to navigate (perfect use of CSS and a grid based layout). Horizontal scroll bars have been out there for a decade, but today it feels that they are gaining a new context. The move to horizontal scroll bars is probably an attempt among some designers to provide a more distinct user experience. One way to make websites more responsive is through "keypress navigation," which has not been widely adopted so far. But unfortunately we've observed more designs implementing this effectively. Web designers of Web applications are paying significantly more attention to the way in which functionality is presented and are trying to improve the user experience with more interactive and responsive solutions.

7. Slab Typefaces
These are relatively new as in the past logos and headers were smaller and more understated by web designers. However, combined with the trend towards larger headers, slab typefaces demand the reader to take notice.

8. Rich and strong typography
It has played a major role in Web design for years now. Bold, strong, heavy headlines can effectively convey the purpose of an e-commerce website or portfolio, while subtler headings help structure content and improve legibility. Obviously, the big change we're seeing today is richer, more versatile typography. Oversized logos on an evenly oversized header and Footer. We've further noticed that Web designers are extending their font stacks, adding incrementally more fall-back fonts in case a specified font is not available.

9. Recent trends
like embossing, PNG transparency, rich user Interfaces, Font replacement, Huge Images, Modal boxes (A modal box is like the pop-up's more sophisticated They serve as a user-friendly alternative to classic JavaScript windows), Media blocks, The magazine look , Carousels (slideshow navigations, in which the content rotates vertically or horizontally), Introduction blocks (place the most important message of the website right there and thus make sure that readers get the message as quickly as possible.) year.

10. More Personalization
As web designers look for more ways of attracting users and prospects to their websites and generating business online, personalization is emerging as an important component of managing the web experience for site visitors – and delivering business value. Be simple, invisible complexity, big and bold, art and creativity, bigger picture. Web Typography is going to reach some new heights in 2010-2011. JQuery, Mootools as well as CSS3 are evolving and reaching new levels of quality and 'interactivity'. Everything seems to be moving forward to larger elements which focus the attention.

If you have not checked out CSS3 and HTML5 websites yet (like http://www.12thi.com ), you should really look into it because they will change the way you design and code. You can take advantage of the new features to create cleaner and more efficient layout.

It is possible that we have missed some other great trends and factors. Why do not you contribute some interesting information here? Please do not hesitate to share it with us in comments.
