So, you need to have WordPress on a subdomain and want to know how to create a WordPress subdomain.

Creating a WordPress subdomain is a fairly straight forward task. But first things first. A subdomain is a separate entity from WordPress. You can have a subdomain that you could put a web site on, a forum, a WordPress blog etc.

So first things first, you need to create a subdomain on your web site where you can install WordPress.

Creating a subdomain

To create a subdomain you will need to log into your web hosting account. I am going to cover the cPanel interface here but most interfaces will be fairly similar.

'Subdomains' option in your cPanel account on your web host. This will be located under the 'Domains' category in cPanel. You should also see options for 'Addon Domains', 'Parked Domains', 'Redirects', and 'Simple DNS Zone Editor' in the 'Domains' category. Obviously we are going to select the 'Subdomains' option.

After you click on the Subdomains option you will see two text boxes. The one to the right contains your domain and the one to the left is empty. The text box on the left is where you will enter the name that you have chosen to be your subdomain. This can be any name you like. You should try to keep it either short or rich with keywords. Preferably both if possible.

So say our domain name is widgets.com and we are going to name our subdomain 'blue' then we will end up with 'blue.widgets.com' with our subdomain added. You could put in 'green' for 'green.widgets.com' or 'pink' for 'pink.widgets.com', well you get the idea.

Once you have picked your name just type it in the text box on the left and click the 'Create' button. That's it! You now have a subdomain.

But your thinking that's great but you want WordPress on your subdomain, so that is where we're heading next.

Installing WordPress on your subdomain

Go back to your cPanel home page and find the 'Fantastico De Luxe' option. This should be located under the 'Software / Services' category. It has the smiley face icon above it.

Look for the 'WordPress' option which you will find located under the 'Blog' category. After you click on the 'WordPress' option you should see an option for a 'New Installation'.

After you click on 'New Installation' you will see numerous options. The first option will be the 'Install on domain' option. You will notice a dropdown box next to this option. When you click on this dropdown box you should see your newly created subdomain listed as an option. In keeping with our example you would see 'widgets.com' as the default address and 'blue.widgets.com' in the dropdown box. You will want to select your subdomain.

If you do not see your subdomain then it was not created correctly and you will have to go back to your cPanel home page and create your subdomain again.

After you have selected your subdomain to install WordPress in, you will want to fill out all the other options. I would suggest leaving the 'Install in directory' option blank so WordPress installs into the root directory of your subdomain.

So if your domain is widgets.com and you want your subdomain to be 'blue' then your WordPress blog would be located at blue.widgets.com provided you left the folder name blank to install into the root directory of your subdomain.

If you install WordPress in a folder on your subdomain, say we name this folder 'plastic' then your WordPress blog would be located at 'blue.widgets.com/plastic'.

It can get a bit confusing which is why I would suggest leaving the box blank and installing WordPress in the root directory of your subdomain unless you have a good reason to do otherwise.

Launched in 2003, WordPress is now the world’s most popular blogging platform. It is used as a powerful website creation tool and a content management system (CMS). It is free and an open source tool originally designed for bloggers. The blogging tool is based on PHP and MY SQL. From its launch in 2003, this simple blogging tool has evolved into a powerful CMS and website creation tool for millions of users around the world. According to the latest statistics, almost 19% of the world’s top 10 million websites are using a WordPress platform. In total, the number of websites using WordPress is now over 60 million.

WordPress is still basically open source blogging software that allows beginners to start their own blog in only a few simple steps. As the free and open source WordPress.com software allows upgrades, the simple blogging software is now much more than just a blogging platform. The software allows users and programmers to add and upgrade their account with personalized domain names, video storage and custom CSS.

WordPress Account Types

There are two types of WordPress accounts, those hosted by WordPress.com and a self-hosted WordPress.org that will need to be installed on your own hosting account. Some of the basic highlights and differences between the two types are as follows:

WordPress.com

It is hosted by WordPress for FREE (although some optional upgrades are charged) and allows users a number of different upgrades and better content management options. WordPress handles the hosting service and the blogger only needs to concern themselves with providing the content. The hosting service includes security features and backups. It also allows you to upgrade to your own custom domain. WordPress.com allows users to choose from a wide range of themes or create your own custom theme for your website.

WordPress.com also allows users to integrate their website or blog with the top social media networks like tumble, Facebook and Twitter. Some of the other features included are statistics, sharing and polls. In case you require help, there is a large resource center available that can provide detailed guides to WordPress.com users for almost any issue … major or minor.

WordPress.org

If you are signing up with WordPress.org, you will be responsible for managing your own content, as well as hosting your website or blog on your own. This means that you will have to find a paid hosting company to host your website with regular backups and maintenance. Most security features are also provided by the hosting company with this option, instead of by WordPress. Just as with WordPress.com, WordPress.org allows you to build our own features using scripting languages like PHP and CSS. Unlike many built-in functions provided by WordPress.com for sharing and other features, you will need to install plugins if you wish to add different functionalities to your website using WordPress.org.

There really is a huge difference between both accounts and understanding these differences is important when choosing the right option for you. Overall, WordPress.com is usually more suitable for beginners, bloggers and small business owners who are interested in free services, whereas WordPress.org may be a better solution for larger companies that are interested in more customized websites, extended features, e-commerce functionality, and better security. Most businesses that want to have complete control of their website, due to security or monetary reasons, choose to go with the WordPress.org option.

What you would do is install the plug-in you want to use and then just configure it within your WordPress dashboard. Since it was released in 2003, WordPress has become one of the most popular web publishing platforms, and today it powers more than 70 million websites. Because it is built on industry standard php and mySQL, the WordPress hosting platform can run on just about any modern server.

And there are thousands of plug-in, widgets, and themes that enable you to build a completely custom website for just about anything that you can imagine.

How does WordPress work?

Since the early days of the Internet, websites have been created in HTML, a programming language that utilizes complex instructions called tags to format text, images, page-layouts and so on. Your web browser then reads the HTML code interpreting the tags to render and display the content of a particular page. These days, you can install WordPress on your own web hosting account in a few minutes. And once installed, it enables you to use a simple, web-based editor to create web pages without having to learn HTML. There is even a hosted version at WordPress.com, that allows you to create a new WordPress website in just a few seconds. The down-side to this method is that you do not have your own domain name, but instead you are using a sub-domain. Most Internet professionals agree that registering and building upon your own domain name and website is more valuable in the long run than spending the same amount of time to build a website using someone else’s domain name. This is why it is recommended that you get a shared web hosting account and install WordPress on your hosting account. Many shared hosting accounts include an easy click-to-install feature that makes installing WordPress on your own hosting account using your own domain name a snap.

  • johnday.WordPress.com
  • johnday.com

    • Clean, search engine friendly code
  6. You will be in control of your own content. Some other publishing platforms limit what you can or can not do on your own website. And your locked into that service, so if it ever shuts down you could easily lose all your content. With WordPress you can import your data from other systems like blogger or tumbler. And you can easily export your data to move away from WordPress, should you choose. You are in control of your website and your content.

Design a website with WordPress and a Web Hosting account:

The following steps outline the process you will go through when setting up a WordPress website on your web hosting account.

WordPress is free to download, and Google Sites is already there on the web for you if you've signed up for a free Gmail account. There's an embarrassment of riches out there for anyone interested in creating a web presence for little or no money. But there are always hidden costs to anything that's "free", and if you want to put an organization or business online on a low budget it's good to know them now. Here are some of the most common criteria. I am discounting sites hosted on WordPress.com because they can not take advantage of the most compelling WordPress features, such as plugins.

Easy to get started

We all have too much to do and too little time, so ease of getting started is important. Google Sites wins this hands down because it requires no installation or download step. WordPress, on the other hand, must be obtained from the WordPress site and you must already have a web hosting account in order to make use of it. Winner: Google Sites

Easy to maintain

At first Google Sites looks easier to maintain. For a very small site, it may be. But the WordPress internal architecture lets you create a dramatic appearance differently simply by changing or manipulating a theme. WordPress themes are infinitely richer than those offered by Google Sites. Thousand of gorgeous WordPress themes are available free all over the web. Winner: WordPress

Ability to add features the product does not yet have (extensibility)

No software product, ever, has fulfilled all its users' needs. The best ones have an extensible architecture: Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Excel … and WordPress. Want to add affiliate sales through Amazon to your site but have no tech knowledge? No problem, there's a WordPress plugin. Want to sell your crafts, artwork or services on your site? Plenty of WordPress plugins for ecommerce. Want to do any of those things from a Google Site? Sorry, no can do. They do not have an extensible architecture. Winner: WordPress

Third party support and training

All successful software products have lots of consultants, books, and training programs available for them. That means if you end up not having the time or technical knowledge to add a particular feature to your site, you can rely on a web ecosystem to find the help you need. WordPress has well over a million installations, tens of thousands of knowledgeable developers, and lots of books available both online (for example, http://www.OnTheWebInAnHour.com ) and offline (your local bookstore). Sites? Not so much. Winner: WordPress

Easy to move to another host

Do you like being tied down to a single company for anything? Most people who have responsibilities in any business or organization understand that's not an acceptable risk. One policy change, one simple decision to move into your previously undisturbed market segment, one rep who just does not like you, and boom! Your comfortable niche is gone. Or what if you just have liability problems, or find a better deal elsewhere? Moving a website can be traumatizing enough. Make sure you can do so easily. Moving WordPress sites is child's play; HostGator, for example, will move it for free. What makes Google Sites so wonderfully easy to start under the hood results in a site full of all kinds of extra, copyrighted Google code you can not take with you. Plus they just do not have a good mechanism to allow you to take all your work with you to another host. It's a big gotcha. Winner: WordPress

Building a website is easy now. The ability to update articles yourself, keeping it running, getting third party help, and having a choice of web hosts make the decision far more different than you might have considered.

Magento is among the most popular e-commerce platforms of the world. Developers prefer Magento over other platforms because it provides them an option to customize settings according to their needs and requirements. Large businesses prefer Magento because it is powerful and they have got a big spending budget to pay annual fees for Premium Enterprise subscription. Magento is an ideal choice for global brands as it provides all the necessary features to benefit global shopping carts. Adding products to a Magento store is not a very difficult task. An easy method given below can help the users who want to add products to their shopping cart.

Step 1

Firstly, open the page of your website that contains products and then return to Quick-start wizard. Now make a click on "Create New Products" from the Products menu. You will be given a detailed list of information about how you can manage all the products on Magento. After reading this information, click on Continue.

Step 2

Select the product type. Now you will be asked if you wish to use the Complex Product Types. It will also ask you for an Attribute Set. For now, select default for the Attribute Set.

The option for Complex Product Types lets you list group products, gift cards, configurable products and bundled products. For now, we will only make an addition of a simple product, so let this option remain de-selected.

Now make a click on Continue.

Step 3

Now you will be asked to fill in all the product details. Such details include the name of product, product's description, delivery details, SKU and weight. Fill in all these details.

For the description of product, turn on and use a WYSIWYG Editor (What You See Is What You Get). Turning on this editor will enable the word processing options like paragraph formatting, italic and bold text. Alternately, you can also write directly in the description box with html text.

Options for special products include Visibility and Status. Visibility allows the user to specify whether any specific product can be seen in catalog, search bar or in both. Status allows the user to select wherever or not the specific product is enabled in the store.

When you are done, make a click on Save and then Continue Edit.

Step 4

Add images and prices. To add images for products, click Images from menu in the left side. Select Browse files in order to add a desired picture from your computer.

After selecting the image, click Upload File.

Now you can select thumbnail, base image and small image for the uploaded image.

Click Save and then Continue Edit.

For adding price to the product, click Prices from the menu on left hand side. Complete all the required fields and then click Save.

Step 5

Now add Meta Information. Click Meta Information from the menu given on left hand side. Select the description and title for search engines.
